Soon after Attiya Latif became the chair of the Minority Rights Coalition (MRC) at her university, there was a spate of hate crimes on campus, including spray‐painted hate speech and swastikas. For Attiya, the trouble hit home when a racial slur was spray‐painted across the door of her passkey‐protected, on‐campus apartment. It was time to act, she said.
Attiya mobilized the MRC to reach out to other student organizations to create a campaign in response to on‐campus hate crimes. Called Eliminate the Hate, the program was envisioned as a way to curb these crimes and provide a united front of peace and tolerance.
