INTRODUCTION

Higher education (HE) has three main forms of environmental impacts:

  1. the direct impacts of its activities, such as use of energy and water in buildings or staff and student travel to and from their places of learning and teaching;
  2. the indirect impacts on students’ knowledge about, and behaviour with regard to, environmental issues;
  3. the indirect impacts of research about environmental issues.
