“WHAT IS A PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL?” THROUGHOUT THIS CHAPTER, I WILL RELY ON an answer that, while universally accepted in most organizations, is rarely verbalized: “A performance appraisal is a formal record of a supervisor’s opinion of the quality of an employee’s performance.” The operant word in this definition is opinion.
