Silo mentality

Sometimes well-established teams can see themselves as separate and different from the rest of the organisation. Over time these teams can develop a mentality which is compartmentalised, either due to a competitive spirit or because they feel nobody understands them or what they do. This unhealthy behaviour can create tension within the organisation. Your role as their manager is to ensure they see the bigger picture and to help the team better integrate into the wider organisation.

First, think:

  • Is it acceptable to have this kind of culture within the organisation? What has helped to create the culture of silo thinking? What makes you sure this is the wrong culture for this group?
  • What are the benefits of better integration? ...
