Overt resistance to change

Change is a constant in the modern working world. You can’t allow individuals to hold change back through resistance. It might be possible to be flexible, but sometimes it simply isn’t. Part of your job is to help manage people through the constant change processes which exist. But what do you do when you encounter a real ‘heels dug in’ attitude to change?

First, think:

  • What is this person’s contribution to the team? What value do they bring?
  • Is there justification to the opposition? Does your colleague offer alternatives to the opposed change? Is this aversion to change affecting the quality of work presented?
  • How have you dealt with this resistance in the past? Have you always given in?
