A few hours before Hurricane Matthew hit the U.S. coast, Tracey and I (Ernie) were driving home to Ormond Beach, Florida, on Interstate 75. As we stared at the solid white line of opposing headlamps, it felt very unsettling to be one of very few cars heading south, right into the hurricane.

The people in those cars must have wondered what we were thinking. Our biggest concern was for Tracey’s parents, who had been forced to evacuate their home and were staying at our place.
