Risk is at the heart of transforming a company. Starting a new industry, launching a new product, reinventing a company, turning a draft horse into a racehorse require risk taking. Changing strategy is a risk. Investing in nascent technology is a risk. Not investing in opportunity is a risk. Ironically, it is risk-averse managements that create the need for transformative CEOs. Risk-averse managements pull back in tough times; shrink from change in tough times; cut investments that get and keep customers.

How does the transformative CEO think about risk?
