Getting into the Action

Skyles Gym was busier than ever on Friday. Many of the machines were humming, mostly with young men and women. Lou figured they were heading to the beach this summer afternoon and were buffing up before they hit the sand. He remembered those days.

Steph led the pack of sweating bodies on the elliptical machines. Later, hair soaked and a towel around her shoulders, Steph stopped by as Lou read the newspaper—the obituary section—and pedaled on his stationary bike.

“Lou, you’re looking glum today.”

“Yeah.”

“We still on for coffee?”

“What?”

“Coffee—we still good to go today?”

“Coffee—oh, yeah. Right,” he said, almost in a trance.
