As a university student, I recall seeing some maintenance workers on the balcony of a building. They were watching people in the square below. A week or so later, I saw the same workers building a new concrete path in the square. They placed it where a worn grass path had existed before. Then it dawned on me. They had observed people’s shortcuts through the grass to determine where to place new paths. They were looking for patterns.
