New ideas come from new communities
The paper arrived on the desk, “Strategy as revolution” by Gary Hamel. 1 On the cover was a hand-scribbled note from the CEO: “You might like this, or as the box of pills said to Alice, eat me.” The article and the intriguing quote from the CEO were both eye-catching. It was worth the read too.
In Hamel’s article, he outlined ten principles to help organisations to be more revolutionary. Principle 6, strategy making must be democratic, centred on the need to speak to under-represented groups in order to add creativity to a strategy. Three constituencies were seen as particularly important—youth, newcomers and geographic peripheries.
