When the Internet first made its appearance as a mass phenomenon in the early 1990s, many pundits heralded its arrival by announcing that finally the era of “convergence” had arrived. Digital media would allow for the extension into cyberspace of existing empires in a way that reinforced old media power. Those who controlled both the content and the distribution of their assets would be the new leaders, and vast profits and synergies would be released in this grand convergence.
