18Establish the Mythology

All series contain some inherent mythology. At a minimum, this will include the backstories for each main character—which may or may not be completely true. As this book is all about scripted television series, all characters and plotlines are fictional. And fiction is always open to interpretation. In other words, every character has his/her own agenda and perspective on past events. “If memory serves…” is about as reliable as it gets, even for the most honest among us.
