Spark Relationships

You may have heard the saying “It’s not what you know but who you know.” It’s true. People make hiring and firing decisions, people decide who should receive career-building assignments, and people decide who will be invited to important meetings.

At one accounting firm, for example, the senior managers met at the end of each year to rate the junior employees. If a certain manager had worked with you, they’d give you a rating (hopefully a high one). If a manager had interacted with you at a company social event, they’d also rate you. A small percentage of employees would be rated “above expectations”—meaning they would be on the fast track for promotion and would receive a larger bonus.
