PROGRAM MANAGEMENT

The PMBOK® Guide defines program management as “the centralized coordinated management of a program to achieve the program’s strategic objectives and benefits” (Project Management Institute 2008, p. 10). It defines a program as “a group of related projects managed in a coordinated way to obtain benefits and control not available from managing them individually. Programs may include elements of related work outside of the discrete projects in the program” (Project Management Institute 2008, p. 9). A very large project may in some cases be called a program, but here we use the PMI definition of the term to ensure a common understanding.
