DEI and L&D are inextricably linked. A culture of inclusion requires a culture of learning. The more that we are curious, challenge our biases, and bring diverse perspectives into the conversation, the more we are able to come up with better solutions for problems and adapt to new situations. All of this deeply impacts the success of an organization.

This chapter will help you understand how diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) relates to talent development and the importance of integrating it into learning and development (L&D) in order to help recruit and retain employees. It will discuss how to set yourself up for success when it comes to combining DEI with business goals for everyone in the organization.

Defining Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are words we are hearing much more often these days, and cultivating a culture of DEI to recruit and retain talent is a challenge many organizations are facing, especially during the Great Resignation where employees are leaving their jobs or switching careers during the post‐pandemic era. Let's begin by thinking about what DEI means in a simpler way. According to inclusion strategist Vernā Myers, “Diversity is being invited to the party. Inclusion is being asked to dance.”1
