It is one of the peculiarities of making movies that a VFX Producer may be hired at any one of several stages of a project. Unlike the director (who is on the project from beginning to end), a DP (whose role is confined largely to the production phase), or a composer (who usually doesn’t start work until postproduction gets underway), a VFX Producer may be brought on board as early as script development to as late as postproduction or anywhere in between. The actual function of the VFX Producer may, in fact, be performed by someone who is not a specialist in this field at all, but who is drafted to “wrangle” the visual effects because there’s no one else on the production staff to do it.
