In contemporary filmmaking, miniatures as a visual effects technique are no longer as popular as they once were. Miniatures have had to yield ground to CG models that sometimes are less costly overall and easier to integrate with other elements. Even so, in the right hands and given the right subject, miniatures still bring a cinematic dimension to films that is difficult to match by computer. Witness the flawless miniature work in such films as The Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series, The Aviator (2004), King Kong (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), and many others.
