The Challenges of Operating on Distant Locations
Runaway production—that bugaboo of the Hollywood entertainment industry—has had at least one positive effect on visual effects: It has taught us to exploit the vast resources of the Internet to share images among widely scattered locations. Sooner or later, these far-flung operations will need to be linked to exchange not just mundane data like tomorrow’s call sheet but visuals such as dailies and shots in progress.
There are a number of efficient electronic and digital tools that facilitate long-distance communications, and the vocabulary of these tools has become part of the digital age: broadband, file sharing, FTP sites, satellite communications, teleconferencing.
