5 – Research

Research is a part of every design process. Research answers questions, and it can also lead to new ideas or interpretations. Every designer needs a foundation of knowledge in history, literature, musical instruments, architecture, decor, and costume.

Research has some basic tenets. If you’re doing a production of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra, it is critical to understand the climates of the locations in the time period. They were different than they are now.

Research must always begin with original source materials. If you search Cleopatra online, you might find wonderful images from the 1934 film that starred Claudette Colbert. You might also find the over-the-top 1960’s production that starred Elizabeth Taylor and Richard ...
