Research is a part of every design process. Research answers questions, and it can also lead to new ideas or interpretations. Every designer needs a foundation of knowledge in history, literature, musical instruments, architecture, decor, and costume.
Research has some basic tenets. If you’re doing a production of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra, it is critical to understand the climates of the locations in the time period. They were different than they are now.
