9 – Principles of Design

If the Elements of Design are like the Chemical Elements shown in the Periodic Table, then the Principles of Design might be said to be basic, and then increasingly complex, Chemical Compositions where simple elements are combined to create complex pictures.

Like choosing design elements, metaphor assists in choosing how best to use the Principles of Design. The creation of the composition(s) allows the production team the subsequent ability to guide and control what the audience sees and how they react. The stage space is in constant motion, that isn’t likely scenery moving; it’s the actors, the flow of the costume fabric, changing light and projections, and movement in the soundscape that focuses the audience attention. ...
