An insulated metal surface may be affected by corrosive attack if the insulating material is applied in a wet state or if it is allowed to become wet for prolonged periods after application. The corrosion may be specific or general. A typical example of a specific corrosive attack is that of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of austenitic steel due to the action of water-soluble chlorides in the presence of moisture.
