Chapter 13

Thermal stresses in functionally graded materials

Abstract

This chapter presents free vibration and thermal stability analyses of functionally graded (FG) sandwich plates under temperature gradients. In particular, various through-the-thickness temperature distributions such as uniform, linear and non-linear are taken into account. The latter is given in different forms: i) Power law variation; ii) Solution of the one-dimensional Fourier's heat conduction equation; iii) Sinusoidal. The influence of initial thermal stresses on the free vibration characteristics of FG sandwich plates is investigated. The effect of volume fraction index, aspect ratio, boundary conditions, length-to-thickness ratio, sandwich plate type and temperature ...
