The Promise and Perils of Focus

Given the deluge of data, explosion in choice, and the now constant fear of missing out on the perfect decision, it is not surprising that we have run into the arms of experts, technology, and protocols. There’s comfort in outsourcing our thinking and the belief (hope?) that those who know more will guide us toward optimal choices. Those with a focus on our area of interest will obviously know more about the decision we need to make than we do, so why not defer to them?

Let’s stop and think for a moment about focus. Who doesn’t appreciate and praise focus? It’s the key to getting things done. It’s what allows you to overcome the urge to procrastinate, the allure of YouTube, and the constant distractions ...
