The “How You’ll Be Remembered After You’ve Left the Room” Principle

You may recall the 2011 Academy Awards when actress Melissa Leo, upon being named best supporting actress, came up to the stage and began yammering: “Oh my, oh my God. Oh wow really, really really, really, really truly wow . . . OK. Yeah, I am kind of speechless. Golly sakes . . .” Then she used the “F” word.

I think she’s a wonderful actress. But she’s not exactly a household name. And after that exhibition, I fear that Leo’s performance will lead her to be remembered mostly as the actress who blurted out a profanity at the Oscars.

That’s how the “How You’ll Be Remembered After You Leave the Room” Principle works. These things stick in people’s minds.
