Tinkering is not difficult to align to a set of standards, and assessment is also entirely possible. More and more, those creating standards and assessment have hands-on tinkering in mind.

Standards

I love my California State Science Content Standards; they encompass nearly every bit of knowledge learned since the dawn of creation. With six to eight years of hard study, any respectable PhD candidate should be able to master this information. It seems like a tall order, though, that we teachers have the solemn expectation upon us to impart it to each of our students, regardless of what they came in the door knowing.
