Additional benefits of MOOCs
Abstract
The benefits of providing MOOCs are not just about income generation and research has shown that many universities are investing in MOOCs with the hope of longer-term benefits rather than just short-term income generation. This chapter discusses some of the most frequently cited reasons for MOOC investment that were given by universities interviewed during this research activity. These “softer” outcomes included relationship building, profile-raising and fulfilment of strategies for public engagement and public good and similar objectives, and there is also the motivation to engage in practical experiments that may involve many thousands of online learners in order to get a better understanding of what works ...
