1. Getting to Know Windows 8.1 Apps and the Windows Store

With Windows 8, Microsoft embraced a new type of software program colloquially known as an app. (That’s short for application.) A Windows 8/8.1 app differs from a traditional software program in that it doesn’t run on the Windows desktop, but rather runs full-screen in Windows’ Modern operating environment. A Modern app is designed for touchscreen use, but can also be operated with the mouse or keyboard.

Windows 8.1 includes a number of these full-screen apps, all accessible from the Windows Start and Apps screens. You can find a lot more Modern apps online in Microsoft’s Windows Store—which is what this book is all about.
