All entrepreneurs need some guiding words at one stage or another. Jack Welch, arguably one of the most successful CEOs of all time (General Electric) helped me immensely. If you don't ask for help, you might not get it. I'll always be grateful to Jack for overriding his office's “standard” response.

Our acclaimed documentary series What's Going On? attracted the support and participation of big names from the acting world including Meg Ryan, Angelina Jolie, Michael Douglas, and Richard Gere. Meg fronted our episode examining the impact of violent conflict on children in Northern Ireland and has been a close friend ever since.

One of my proudest accomplishments is my involvement in the long-running PBS Kids educational series Reading Rainbow, which was the number-one show in the classroom and ran for a hugely successful 21 seasons. In 2005, I picked up an Emmy Award for my role as executive producer. Fast-forward to today, and we're using this experience to launch a new global show which will empower kids to learn to read in a collaborative, fun, and engaging way, including parts of the world where there is low literacy.
