The Heart
A newborn’s heart is about the size of its hand, beating upward of 190 times per minute after birth. When the child reaches adulthood, the heart is still about the size of the hand, though now it beats at a more leisurely rate—about 70 beats per minute—because it has grown larger and stronger. In a day, the average adult heart beats 100,000 times and sends life-sustaining nutrition by pumping 2,000 gallons of blood over 60,000 miles of arteries and veins to feed the body’s organs and tissues.
