Toughening mechanisms in Zanchor-reinforced composites

Abstract
The Zanchor process is a newly developed reinforcement technique for composite laminates using a set of specially designed needles. Applying this process to dry preforms, in-plane fibers are oriented in an out-of-plane direction, resulting in an increase of interlaminar strength. In this chapter, the fracture behavior of Zanchor-reinforced composite laminates is investigated to clarify the toughening mechanism. Experimental results demonstrated that the Zanchor process was highly effective at improving the mode I and II fracture toughness of composite laminates.
