Contemporary dilemmas: tables versus webs

This chapter picks up the narrative thread of the preceding one—telling the story of the rise of modern knowledge systems. It considers specifically two of the more perspicuous forms of these systems: the relational database and the semantic web. Even if at a technical level these kinds of systems appear congruous, without doubt they have followed different historical trajectories, leading to different cultures of designers and adopters.
