Mains Electricity Supply for Charging Vehicle Batteries

Abstract

Two classes of electric vehicle, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and the battery electric (BEV), obtain electricity from the mains. It is therefore appropriate to enquire, for any particular country or region, whether the generation and distribution systems installed are adequate to cope with large fleets of such electric vehicles. After an initial review of the statistics of electricity production around the world, the chapter describes the various methods of providing electricity and their significance for greenhouse gas emissions.
