Chapter 2 Organisational diagnosis

Introduction

It was Einstein who remarked that ‘we will never be able to solve our problems at the same order of complexity we used to create our problems’. In this chapter several tools to measure aspects of culture are described in order to determine how dysfunctional it may be. These are largely survey instruments that rely upon honest assessments by key opinion formers. The first point to recognise is that organisations are systems of interconnected parts – people, technology, physical properties and the activities that flow through them. Change in one part impacts on another, and so before any prescription is possible, a thorough diagnosis is necessary.
