Chapter 8 Relations with the external environment
Introduction
In this chapter we examine the interaction of organisations with their environment and external stakeholders. How can external agencies cause the relationship with an organisation to become toxic and vice versa? There are several areas that we will explore here and the sources of toxicity can be classified into three major categories:
- Unbalanced power relationships.
- Ill-defined legal and regulatory frameworks.
- Tragedy of the commons’.
These causes in turn lead to specific undesirable and in some cases illegal activity:
- Bribery to obtain and retain business.
