The Political Economy of the TRIPSAgreement: lessons from Asiancountries

The main objective of this chapter is to provide an overview of the politico-economic implications surrounding the TRIPS Agreement with particular reference to the experience of Thailand and with a focus on patents. It starts by tracing the history of the international patent system. It then covers the adoption of patent systems by Asian countries. The third part of the chapter describes the negotiating history of the TRIPS Agreement and the key role of the US. The final sections offer an Asian perspective on these developments.
