Traditional Knowledge and theBiotrade: the Colombian experience

Applied traditional knowledge (TK) has preserved and improved plant and animal species and in doing so has made a substantial contribution to the lives of all humans. The great majority of traditional communities show a willingness to share knowledge which is beneficial to humankind. But despite this, the cultural wealth of communities is being seriously depleted by Western-style methods of acquiring knowledge that may be characterized as misappropriation. Clearly the need has now arisen to establish mechanisms for protecting this knowledge.
