If you don’t force users to update their passwords, they are likely to keep the same ones indefinitely. The longer a person uses the same password, however, the more likely it is that other people will learn it and be able to gain access to that user’s account. Password policies enable you to ensure that users update their passwords on a regular basis. Account lockout policies enable you to specify what happens when a user enters an incorrect password in succession. They give you the option of locking accounts out for a limited or indefinite amount of time.
