Darryl Curran (b. 1935) first met Robert Heinecken as a student at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1959. Heinecken would later hire Curran as his teaching assistant and then serve as a member of Curran’s graduate committee. After Curran began teaching photography at California State University at Fullerton in 1967, he was encouraged to join the Society for Photographic Education (SPE) by Heinecken, who was a presenter at its first official conference in 1963.
