After studying with Van Deren Coke15 at the University of New Mexico (1966–1968), Harold Jones (b. 1940) was hired as a curator at George Eastman House (1968–1971). During this time Jones began making what he called “photo drawings”—gelatin silver prints on which he applied colored pencil, food coloring, ink, masking tape, oil and spray paints, and sandpaper as well as chemical toners, to “re-realize” the picture’s surface and its interpretation.
