Vik Muniz
Vicente José de Oliveira Muniz (b. 1961), a.k.a. Vik Muniz, was born in São Paulo, Brazil, but lives and works in New York City. As with Robert Frank’s The Americans (1958), part of Muniz’s command of his subject matter comes from having the eyes of an immigrant living and working in an adopted country, a position that allows Muniz to see things others often take for granted. His outsider-looking-in attitude manifests itself as an energetic, artistic combination of photography with other media in which he re-envisions his subjects, encouraging people to look with more attention.
