While working on his MFA at Columbia College, Chicago (2008), Curtis Mann (b. 1979) attended a Vik Muniz lecture in which Muniz discussed how he overcame problems in his artistic process by “doing the opposite.” This helped Mann to switch his image-making process from using his family’s snapshots to found photographs acquired on eBay and Flickr that depicted landscapes and people from Kenya, Lebanon, Palestine, and Israel, in which he erases part of the composition by means of household bleach.
