This book and the research on which it is based have occupied me for the past eight years. During that time the programme of study that is the book's subject – the Postgraduate Diploma, subsequently MA in Creative Writing and Personal Development at Sussex University – has been discontinued in the wake of the Labour government's decision not to continue subsidising people wishing to study in higher education at a level equivalent to, or lower than, the qualifications they already hold, and the resulting dissolution of adult education departments at British universities.
