The Focus of Measurement

The second key to transformational performance measurement is Focus. To repeat: What gets measured gets managed and what gets managed gets done. Selecting the right measures can create enormous leverage for any organization. And, of course, the things that get measured command management attention, one of a company's most important resources. But as management expert Geoffrey Moore asserts, “Nothing is wasted more in a Fortune 500 corporation than management attention.”1 If management is paying attention, are they paying attention to the right things? Unfortunately, too many organizations appear to be “majoring in the minors.”
