Transliterate cultures

Abstract

Broader social aspects are explored in this chapter in two parts. In the first part, academic cultures are discussed in relation to issues arising from interaction with multiple sources, significant changes in academia and the way communities of scholars shape new ways of working. The theory of “living in a city of villages,” based on Elfreda Chatman’s work, is proposed as a way of understanding how transliterate “movement across” happens in the academic world. The theory addresses how academics negotiate disciplinary and institutional traditions with new ways of working.
