Low birth weight is a valuable public health indicator of maternal health, nutrition, health-care delivery, and poverty. Neonates with low birth weight have a more than 20 times greater risk of dying than neonates without low birth weight. In addition, low birth weight is associated with long-term neurologic disability, impaired language development, impaired academic achievement, and increased risk of chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
