7Team Goals
This chapter reviews team goals and the topics to consider as you guide teams through the goal-setting process. It also discusses the various kinds of goals, why goals must be measurable, and the importance of goal feedback. Finally, it reviews some of the leadership and coaching issues associated with setting and managing team goals.
7.1 What Goals Are
The dictionary defines a goal as “the result or achievement toward which effort is directed” (Random House 1983). Goals concern results and efforts, but most importantly they concern direction. Goals provide direction and focus for our efforts. They clearly define the end that we desire and establish a priority for the required work.
