15. Education and the Working Life
Because of the rapid development of new knowledge and the rapid obsolescence of the old, adults past school age increasingly experience a desire for further education for one (or both) of two reasons: either to maintain or increase their work-related competence; or to engage in learning for its own sake, as an end in itself, as a source of personal satisfaction. Consider each of these in turn.
Most people in the workplace require occasional “retreading.” The percentage of time spent in learning to improve and update performance is bound to grow. Therefore, the distinction between work and learning will become less and less important. Learning will become a part of work, and work a part of learning.
