The designer on location
Television, video, and film productions today are made under a wide range of conditions and the designer’s contributions can vary accordingly.
10.1 Away from the studio
As equipment becomes more mobile and studio staging costs rise, an increasing proportion of television/video productions are being shot on location. In practice, this broad term ‘location’ covers anywhere away from the studio – from a castle to a coal mine or a desert to Disneyland.
The director may accept the location as it is, using the camera very selectively, showing just the parts of the scene that suit the purpose, and avoiding anything that would be inappropriate or likely to distract the audience. The impression a camera conveys ...
