Lighting and the designer
Scenic design and lighting together create the environment for the action. With a good basic knowledge of lighting principles and techniques a designer can anticipate both opportunities and problems.
12.1 Why light the scene?
Away from the studio there is usually light of some kind around. There is nothing to stop us shooting action using that existing lighting. But whether the resulting pictures are successful or unattractive will be a matter of luck. The light direction may be wrong, resulting in half-lit faces or hot tops to heads.
