Quick associations with horror or danger come in typefaces that refer

to periods of social upheaval; blackletter gothic typefaces, textura, and

other medieval typefaces call to mind the dark, superstitious ancestry

of old-world Europe. Even archaic Roman capitals carry a sense of potential

terror. Classical serif faces with distorted details or textural degradation

are similarly scary. In a more contemporary context, typefaces whose

forms have been distorted or whose strokes have details that seem partially

destroyed, dirty, slimy, or fractured convey sinister ideas about the under-

world. Textural alteration, such as that produced through excessive

photocopying or slicing apart, may evoke criminal activity—the notorious

ransom note or the obsessive mutilations of a serial killer. Bold sans

serifs, for example—usually perceived as strong, objective, and neutral—

take on a sinister quality when their contours are ripped or mottled.

horror, black magic, secrecy, or violence. Drawing on historically

dangerous time periods or the fantasies of Hollywood as inspiration,

sinister messages in type and color create anxiety and induce a

quiet terror by playing on our fears and memories of monsters,

boogeymen, and dangerous spirits.
